Important notes
- •Information checked in September 2026 against the official sources listed at the end. Immigration rules changed a lot in 2025–2026 — always confirm with the consulate or AIMA before you go ahead.
- •The D7 visa lets you enter Portugal and apply for a residence permit. The first permit is valid for 2 years and is then renewed for 3-year periods.
- •To keep your residence permit you cannot be outside Portugal for more than 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total, while the permit is valid (unless for justified reasons).
- •The residence permit also allows you to work in Portugal.
- •After 5 years of legal residence you can apply for Permanent Residence.
- •Portuguese nationality: since Organic Law 1/2026 (in force from 19/05/2026) you need 10 years of legal residence (7 for CPLP and EU citizens), counted from the date the first residence permit was issued.
- •The NHR tax regime (Non-Habitual Resident) has been closed to new residents since 2024. Its successor, IFICI, only covers certain qualified activities — retirees and passive income are usually not included. Speak to an accountant.
