Important notes
- •Information checked in September 2026 against the official sources listed at the end. Immigration rules changed a lot in 2025–2026 — always confirm with the consulate or AIMA before you go ahead.
- •The remote work visa (D8) was created by Law 18/2022 and has been in force since 30/10/2022.
- •The €3,680/month requirement (4 × the 2026 minimum wage) is calculated as the average of the last 3 months.
- •The income must come from work done for employers or clients outside Portugal.
- •To keep your residence permit you cannot be outside Portugal for more than 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total, while the permit is valid (unless for justified reasons).
- •Portuguese nationality: since Organic Law 1/2026 (in force from 19/05/2026) you need 10 years of legal residence (7 for CPLP and EU citizens), counted from the date the first residence permit was issued.
- •The NHR regime (Non-Habitual Resident) is closed to new residents. Its successor, IFICI, only covers certain qualified activities — speak to an accountant.
